Nanette Dorothea Potthast’s Family
Nanette Dorothea Potthast was born on 20 July 1944, in Berchtesgaden to Heinrich and his mistress, Hedwig. Heinrich Luitpold Himmler was born in Munich on 7 October 1900 into a conservative middle-class Roman Catholic family. His father was Joseph Gebhard Himmler (1865–1936), a teacher, and his mother was Anna Maria Himmler (née Heyder; 1866–1941), a devout Roman Catholic. Heinrich had two brothers: Gebhard Ludwig (1898–1982) and Ernst Hermann (1905–1945).
Heinrich met his wife, Margarete Boden, in 1927. Seven years his senior, she was a nurse who shared his interest in herbal medicine and homeopathy and was part owner of a small private clinic. They were married in July 1928, and their only child, Gudrun Margarete Elfriede Emma Anna Burwitz (née Himmler), was born on 8 August 1929. The couple was also foster parents to a boy named Gerhard von Ahe, the son of an SS officer who had died. Heinrich became absorbed by work and his married life was strained. It was around 1936 when he met Hedwig, his secretary.
Hedwig Potthast was born on 5 February 1912 in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia as the daughter of a local businessman. After her final Abitur exams at secondary school, she trained as a secretary qualified in foreign languages. At the end of her training in 1928, Hedwig worked in Koblenz. From early 1936 until early 1941, she was Heinrich’s private secretary; by 1939, she had become his mistress. She left her job in 1941 and Heinrich arranged accommodation for her. He fathered two children with her: a son, Helge, born on 15 February 1942, and a daughter, Nanette Dorothea.
Heinrich committed suicide on 23 May 1945, shortly after his arrest by swallowing a poison pellet hidden in his mouth. Hedwig died at the age of 82 on 22 September 1994. Nanette passed away on 13th May 2000.
